Our school district is preparing to implement a new practice that will require all students in grades 5–12 to securely store their cell phones and other personal digital devices in a secure pouch during the school day. This practice will be implemented consistently across our district to provide a common expectation and experience for all students.
The purpose of this initiative is to reduce distractions during the school day and create learning environments where students can fully engage with their teachers, classmates, and academic work.
This districtwide initiative also aligns with new Michigan legislation regarding personal electronic devices in schools and reflects our ongoing commitment to providing safe, positive, and productive learning environments for every student.
Students will keep possession of their devices throughout the day, but the devices will remain secured in the pouch until the end of the school day or when authorized by school staff.
Additional information about implementation, expectations, and procedures will be shared with families before the new practice begins.
Bond Information
The passage of the 2022 bond initiative provided critical funding for the construction of the new Willow School in the Lansing School District. This bond, totaling $129.7 million, supported widespread infrastructure improvements across the district, including the complete rebuild of the new Willow School. With approximately $40 million allocated for this project, the new Willow School was designed to offer a modern, energy efficient learning environment equipped with up-to-date technology and flexible classroom spaces. The investment reflects the district’s commitment to educational excellence and student safety, made possible by the overwhelming community support during the 2022 bond election.
