North School provides a safe environment where all learners grow and succeed!  We value diversity and accommodate students' needs, which is why our teaching practices are both responsive to the needs of our students and reflective.

We also believe that learning does not simply happen in a textbook so project-based learning and real-world application of subject matter are at the forefront of teaching and learning at North.  Families are treated with respect at North and recognized as partners in the learning process. We embrace communication between staff and the community as we work to create the best learning opportunities for all of our children.

At North, we believe our students can and will learn, and we have high expectations for their academic and social achievement.  We believe:

  • We implement culturally responsive positive behavior intervention supports to teach expectations and help students find the positive rewards in navigating their way to success.

  • All students have reading interventions such as System 44 and Read 180 and/or enrichment groups.

  • MSU Partnerships such as 4-H, student tutors, and the Canvases for Communities art after-school program

  • Project Unify/Special Olympics

  • Student Government

  • Reaching Higher's after-school tutoring and enrichment program

  • Family literacy, math, and project-based learning nights

  • One-to-one technology for students

  • North's School Garden and greenhouse and partnership with the Greater Lansing Food Bank

  • The School Improvement Grant which has provided extensive support for improvements in professional development for staff, project-based learning, one-to-one technology for students, improvements for our gardening programs, and support for many, many more sustainable improvements for students!

Title IX - Sex Discrimination/Gender Equity/Sexual Harassment


What is Title IX?

Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any District program, service or activity including, but not limited to: educational programs or activities, extracurricular activities, student services, academic counseling, discipline, classroom assignment, grading, athletics, transportation, etc.

Unlawful Discriminatory Practices Under Title IX

Sexual Harassment (unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature)

Sexual Misconduct/Violence (rape, sexual assault, sexual battery, sexual exploitation and other forms of non-consensual sexual activity)

Stalking (repeatedly following, harassing, threatening or intimidating including by telephone, mail, electronic communication or social media)

Retaliation (adverse academic or other actions against anyone reporting or participating in an investigation of Title IX allegations)
