At Cumberland Elementary School the staff, parents, and community will provide an environment in which our students will learn social and academic skills. We acknowledge the holistic nature of the individual child and will provide the assistance to help overcome conditions which may impede the child's progress.
John Dewey, an early leader in educational reform, often expressed that what the best and wisest parents want for their own child, the community must want for all its children.
Cumberland ENGAGES the youngest student. Cumberland is not only a K-3 building, but offers the award-winning Great Start Readiness Program - a free, full day preschool program for 4-year-olds.

Our school district is preparing to implement a new practice that will require all students in grades 5–12 to securely store their cell phones and other personal digital devices in a secure pouch during the school day. This practice will be implemented consistently across our district to provide a common expectation and experience for all students.
The purpose of this initiative is to reduce distractions during the school day and create learning environments where students can fully engage with their teachers, classmates, and academic work.
This districtwide initiative also aligns with new Michigan legislation regarding personal electronic devices in schools and reflects our ongoing commitment to providing safe, positive, and productive learning environments for every student.
Students will keep possession of their devices throughout the day, but the devices will remain secured in the pouch until the end of the school day or when authorized by school staff.
Additional information about implementation, expectations, and procedures will be shared with families before the new practice begins.
Annual event benefits students and the Lansing community.
