Homebound Services provide temporary educational support for your student if they are unable to attend school due to a medical condition or health-related concern. These services help ensure that your student can continue to access classroom instruction and stay on track academically while at home. A homebound facilitator will work with your student, coordinating with their classroom teacher[s] to deliver assignments, provide instruction, and monitor progress. Homebound is intended as a short-term support until your student is able to return to their regular school setting; it is not a replacement for full-time instruction.

Homebound Services provide instructional support for students when medical circumstances prevent regular school attendance. Homebound instruction consists of two 45-minute sessions per week, or two 60-minute sessions per week for students with special accommodations. The homebound facilitator will coordinate with your student’s home school to collect assignments, textbooks, and other resources aligned with the curriculum. Your student’s regular teacher[s] remain an active part of the team, ensuring continuity of instruction and progress tracking, and remaining the teacher of record. During the two weekly sessions, the homebound facilitator provides one-on-one instructional support, collects completed assignments, delivers new materials from the home school, and communicates progress updates to the classroom teacher to help your student stay on track academically to the best of their ability.

To qualify for homebound services, a student must:

  • Be enrolled in the Lansing School District
  • Have a medical diagnosis from a licensed physician (M.D., D.O., or certified physician assistant) that prevents full-time school attendance.
  • Be expected to miss five or more consecutive school days due to the medical condition.

Once a student qualifies for homebound services, the homebound provider will reach out to you to discuss how the district can best support your student and family in receiving services.

Services are provided in the format that best supports your student and can be adjusted as needed, depending on their health. Instruction may be delivered in-person or virtually. If virtual services are the best option and your student does not have access to a computer, one can be provided. In-person services can take place at any location that best facilitates your student’s learning, including a CADL library, the hospital (if your student is an inpatient and their medical team approves), another public location, or your home if your student is unable to meet in a public setting.

  1. Consult your physician regarding whether homebound or reduced day are needed for your student.
  2. If services are necessary, have your physician [Must be an M.D., D.O., or Certified Physician’s Assistant] complete the Homebound or Reduced Day Services Physician Statement Form.
  3. Have the completed form sent to the Lansing School District's Special Education Department by either of the following methods:
  4. The district's homebound provider will reach out to you using the contact information on file with the district to arrange services.
  5. Services will be provided twice a week, following the Lansing School District calendar, for the length of time indicated in your student’s physician’s statement. If it becomes necessary to extend services, we would need an updated note from your student’s doctor with the new end or reevaluation date. Likewise, if your student is able to return to school sooner than expected, we need a note from the doctor clearing them to return to school with any accommodations explained.

While your student is receiving homebound services, they can continue to access the same meals they would normally receive at school. If you are interested, we can arrange for weekly deliveries of breakfasts and lunches directly to your home.

If you would like to participate in this service, please list any food allergies or dietary restrictions your student may have in the top section of the form linked above. Once we have that information, we can coordinate the best day and time for the food deliveries.
