Many parents have daily struggles with kids who can behave in ways that are disruptive, disrespectful, and sometimes dangerous to themselves, the parent and others. Do you sometimes find yourselves in power struggles and want to know some of the interventions and behavioral principles that will allow you to better help kids make positive choices? The facilitator of this workshop will assist participants in exploring the basics of why youth act the way they do, while carefully examining what the parent brings to the situation. Participants will take part in a number of role plays/scenarios to enhance their understanding of their child’s cognitive schema as well as their disposition during the power struggle. The focus of this training is on understanding the importance of the function of the behavior (what is the youth trying to communicate) and behavioral interventions that work, including antecedents, consequences, incentives, proactive strategies, and helping youth make appropriate and safe choices.
