“Why is My Child So Anxious?”

Facilitator - Dr. Jennifer Ermiger, Siena Heights Clinical Mental Health Counseling Director
Wednesday, February 10, 2021, 5:30-6:30pm

At some point, anxiety affects 30% of children and adolescents, yet 80% never get help (https://childmind.org). Childhood anxiety can become debilitating for many students which often leads to an inability to cope with life stressors, depression, school failure, and the potential for substance abuse issues. Children often do not have the ability to understand these feelings, and when untreated anxiety has a high comorbidity level with depression, substance abuse, and ADHD. The facilitator will provide a comprehensive overview of the various anxiety disorders, and the potential impact on a child’s social, emotional and academic development. Participants will take part in group activities to enhance their level of competency to understand the factors that contribute to anxiety, as well as strategies to work with children at home. Participants will also gain a fundamental understanding of the impact of medications and therapeutic approaches to treatment as it relates to childhood anxiety.
