Breaking Ground on New Sheridan Road

Leaders celebrate another step forward for the Lansing School District.

The Lansing School District celebrated a new chapter for Sheridan Road School with a groundbreaking ceremony on October 14, marking an investment in students and the community’s future.

Now under construction, the new school will serve students in grades 5–8. The approximately $35 million project includes 61,525 square feet and 22 classrooms, creating a modern learning environment designed to support student success.

Plans feature dedicated art and music classrooms, a gymnasium, a library and a cafeteria that converts into a performance space. Flexible classrooms, updated technology and energy efficient design will help students explore their interests, collaborate and build skills for the future.

"The foundation is not just for a new building, but for a new Lansing School District. One that provides a space where kids can learn, thrive, grow, and be part of our wonderful Lansing community," said Jessica Benavides, Superintendent of Schools.

Sheridan Road’s transformation is supported by the district’s $129.7 million bond initiative, approved in May 2022 with more than 71 percent voter support. The initiative funds replacement buildings for Sheridan Road, Mt. Hope, Willow and Lewton, along with improvements at J.W. Sexton High School including a renovated auditorium.

As construction moves forward, the district thanks Lansing voters, families, staff and community partners for helping turn that shared vision into lasting opportunities for generations of students across the Lansing School District.
