BOE Resolution - October 21 Special Meeting
Lansing, MI — October 22, 2025 — The Lansing School District Board of Education held a student disciplinary hearing in closed session to hear the appeal of a student’s permanent expulsion following an incident that occurred on May 22, 2025, at Dwight Rich School for the Arts.
During a special meeting, after the closed session hearing, in open session the Board read and unanimously approved the following resolution:
The Board conducted a student discipline hearing in closed session at the parent’s request to hear the parent’s appeal of the Consultation Team’s decision to permanently expel the Student from all public schools in the state of Michigan. The appeal hearing afforded the Student and the Student’s representatives an opportunity to present pertinent evidence for the Board’s consideration. The Board has carefully considered all the evidence produced in this student discipline hearing.
A preponderance of the evidence establishes that on May 22, 2025, the Student possessed a firearm in a weapon-free school zone. Clear and convincing evidence establishes that the Student did not possess the firearm for use as a weapon or for direct or indirect delivery to another person for use as a weapon.
The Student has been previously suspended from school.
The Student is permanently expelled only from the Lansing School District. The Board will consider a petition for reinstatement to the Lansing School District no sooner than 150 school days from the date of expulsion and the student may be reinstated no sooner than 180 school days from the date of expulsion. Before reinstatement, the student must,
- Follow all reinstatement criteria previously set forth by the Office of School Culture in their communication to the student.
- Establish that the Student has not engaged in conduct during the period of expulsion that may be viewed by the Board as detrimental to the Student’s continued education at the District;
- Demonstrate to the satisfaction of the Board that the Student received educational instruction and cooperatively participated in an educational program during the period of expulsion;
Consistent with Revised School Code Sections 11a and 1311(1), the Board finds that the interests of the District are served by this resolution.
